I wrapped my arms around the vampire and squeezed with all of my strength. She choked and tried to push me away, but I wasn’t about to let her go. I was a hunter. She was my prey.

“Let. Go. Of. Me!” Willow demanded through gritted teeth.

I hugged her harder.

“Fucking hell, Cut! That hurts! You can thank me from afar!”

Finally, I released her. But not before planting a wet kiss on her cheek. She stumbled away, stricken and wild-eyed.

I looked in the mirror. My hair was cut, styled and curled to divine perfection.

“I’m a magical mermaid,” I said to myself in the mirror. Then, I turned to Willow again. “You gave me that. Thank you.”

Willow was wiping her cheek with a scowl. “You’re so weird.”

August flicked my hair. “It looks really good. The style.”

“Of course it does,” Willow snapped. “I did it.”

I shook my head in awe, no longer caring that she was probably Marni’s relative, and should be my enemy. “All hail.”

Willow’s cheeks turned a soft pink. “Pull yourself together, Cut.”

Since the night at the warehouse, I’d had an uneven slash of a hair length thanks to that magical laser. Now, with Willow’s handiwork, my mane swished around at my shoulder blades in gorgeous cascading layers. I usually cut my own hair, but this savant of a vampire spent over thirty minutes perfecting the length and style before curling my locks.

Now, I looked fabulous.

August and Willow were initially excited that Colin could get us into Avenue4 tonight. But now, that excitement was clearly tinged with anxiety.

Because of Cayne.

In my opinion, we didn’t have much to lose.

August’s left eyelid kept twitching. Willow’s mouth was turned into a permanent frown.

I huffed, “If you both keep sulking, you’re not going.”

“I’m not sulking,” Willow said with a totally sulky tone.

I pointed at her. “Then get your hottest dress on your bangin’ ass and get ready for the most epic recon night ever.”

“We’re not actually going to drink, Aster,” August said.

“Correction,” I said. “One of us is going to drink. The other two are going to be watching.”

“You mean one of us will be dead weight,” Willow amended.

“Not dead weight,” I said. “It’ll help us blend in. If there are bad guys there tonight, we need to blend in. Every club crew has at least one shit-faced member, if not several.”

And maybe, if the gods allowed it, one of these overworked, stressed-out people might have an iota of fun.

I didn’t actually think we’d find anything tonight. But it was worth a try. If I made it mandatory to attend as many A.S. nights while we were tracking down Hawk, that would make my life as an Indentured Employee a lot better.

Yes. I was a little selfish. But I was making sure others benefit too. And if we gather clues in the process, catch criminals and save some kidnapping victims, even better. Not so bad, am I?

When no one objected any further, I asked slyly, “So, who’s it going to be?”

August glanced at Willow. “You did owe me that favor.
